How the absence of critical thinking hinders the notion of cosmopolitanism, and factor x from materializing, further exacerbating the racial divide

Racial prejudice continues to be the most significant social plague in modern society. Racial profiling has been a common vice in the community where the whites are deemed superior to the colored population. Critical thinking reveals that nobody wants to be identified as a racist, but the evils of racism prevail in the current society in different forms. The cosmopolitan nature of American society reveals the ills associated with racism due to the existence of people from diverse racial backgrounds. The white Americans, for instance, view themselves as the dominant race and consider other citizens as second class. Golash-Boza sees racism as a form of madness or a mental disease where a particular people think they are superior to others based on race. It is also important to highlight that a high number of racists are intellectuals with excellent academic qualifications. Educators argue that critical thinking is among the essential skills required for academic and career success (130). This elicits the need to evaluate the lack of critical thinking and how it influences the racial divide in the society. This paper will utilize philosophical writings by various authors in the area of racism, human dignity, cosmopolitanism, and factor x perspectives to develop a valid argument. This will enable the paper to identify how the absence of critical thinking hinders the notion of cosmopolitanism, and factor x from materializing, further exacerbating the racial divide.

    The continued racism in the modern generation can be attributed to increased awareness and knowledge expansion among people rather than lack of it. It has been identified that a majority of nonintellectual people do not possess racist ideologies even where they come from elite communities (Golash-Boza 131). With the increased focus on critical thinking in learning institutions, there is lacking effect of consequent reduction of racial profiling through general acceptance of cosmopolitanism in the society. Critical thinking would enable people to view the issue of racism in a more abstract approach and encourage rationality while interacting with people of different racial backgrounds. Appiah indicates that we owe obligations to other people, and these obligations stretch beyond those people that we are related to or even have social ties such as fellow citizens. Cosmopolitanism identifies that people are different and have a right to their unique personal identities and does not expect people to conform to a single way of life to appreciate one another (48). Critical thinking, therefore, would enable people to understand the true nature of cosmopolitanism and why we need to respect the unique identities of everyone without discrimination or prejudice.

             Racism results from misguided beliefs and irrational thinking where an individual or a group of people believe that they are superior to another and occupy a higher position in life than they do. For instance, most of the white people in the users believe that they are superior to the people from ether races under being white with minimal consideration of factors such as share citizenship and adherence to standards laws. It is only through the absence of critical thinking that the whites see themselves as superior to other races but end up sharing the same social amenities and observing the same law, and further serving in the same religion.

            Critical thinking enables an individual to analyses situations analytically and makes sense out of a given problem. Absence of critical thinking has been a crucial barrier towards cosmopolitism. Besides, it hinders X factors from advancements and further exacerbates the social divide. Lack of critical thinking makes it difficult to propagate the concept of cosmopolitism in the sense that individuals, leaders and the entire society may not be in a position to appreciate that individuals are different; they have different roles in the nation. Cosmopolitanism philosophy holds that all individuals belong to the same society. Every individual was seen as a member of the global community rather than just a person from a particular tribe or ethnic background. Therefore, the absence of critical thinking makes it difficult for society members to see other persons as members of the global community because their reasoning is constrained to tribal, religion, and racial lines.

            Over the last decade, imperialism ideologist, who argued that it is a phenomenon that does not exist in the real world, has criticized cosmopolitism. This indicates that in the nineteenth century, critical thinking was absent because society opposed the existence of cosmopolitism by criticizing it. Most of the societal members viewed cosmopolitism as a phenomenon that is only present in the Utopia. However, in the ninetieth-century things have changed, society and the entire global community have become more enlightened. The 20th-century society started becoming critical thinkers and started embracing the underlying ideology of cosmopolitism. Community members and the global society started thinking critical and viewed individuals who as part of the larger global society. This is evidence of how the essential absence of thinking bared individuals and entire society members’ forum embracing the idea that all individuals are a subset of the broader global community (Andal 56).

            Every person has the right to stay in any part of the world and get equal treatment. Absence of critical thinking made whites to view African as people from the Dark Continent. They saw blacks as inferior members of a particular society. Blacks were seen as individuals who were supposed to stay in a particular location where there is no civilization. They were seen as individuals who are not part of the global society. Most blacks were taken as slaves; they were sexually assaulted and physically abused. They were exposed to hard labor because the whites believed that they were robust and immune to diseases. They were seen as tools of trade rather than rational human beings. This is clear evidence that the absence of critical thinking made the whites to have a myopic view and cannot critically analyze blacks as essential subsets of the global society. Although the civil rights movement tried to fight against racism in the global context, there is still the presence of racism that is practiced by contemporary society. For example, lack of critical thinking has led to racial segregation and lack of equal employment opportunities. Most blacks remain unemployed despite having achieved higher levels of academic qualification. The inequality gap between whites and blacks persist. There is a marginal improvement in terms of income inequality between white and blacks. In the contemporary American U.S society, the rate of unemployment remains as higher as the one that was evident during the 1960s. This is clear proof of how a lack of critical thinking leads to dividing when it comes to access to equal employment opportunities.  The gap between the White rich and the poor black continue to expand, one of the fundamental cause of widening the difference between the two groups is due to lack of critical thinking among most of the employers and especially the whites.

            Absence of critical thinking have exacerbated racial divide during the Obama administration and even in the contemporary Trump administration. The racial divide has depended over the last decade despite having Obama elected as a U.S president during his tenure the rate of racial segregation was found to have escalated. The underlying cause of such an increase is due to the absence of critical thinking among the proponents of the social divide. Most people thought that after Obama was elected president people, and the entire American society could have learned that the racial divide has no bearing in the contemporary society. However, this was not the case because the number of blacks shooting that was experienced during the Obama administration was significantly higher as compared to the current and previous administrations (NBC News 5). Absences of critical thinking have been one of the significant factor hindrances x from materializing. Whites and blacks still have a different view of various issues. This has been a considerable challenge when it comes to innovation. Factor x has been hindered in the senses that Whites still see black an individual who cannot think and come up with their change and also address they are own social and economic challenge. This has made some blacks to lack self-confidence, which consequently prevent factor x from advancing. Lack of critical thinking has a significant exacerbated social divide; the number of blacks graduating from universities and colleges remains significantly lowers as compared to that of Whites. Besides, the number of backs that have been involved and prosecuted of various crimes has also continued to escalate, which consequently increase the social divide in contemporary society (Mosciatti 28). There is a need to establish a sensitization campaign to sensitize the global community thinks critical to address the problem of the social divide.
