Principles of Management
You are to report on a course-relevant article from a major business magazine or journal or Internet. You are eligible to receive the maximum score possible, if the article pertains to “Management”. Any other business topic will be at a 5-point reduction. I suggest browsing through the latest issues of high quality magazines or journals that feature relevant articles. Choose an article that is worthwhile and contains a significant amount of useful information. The article should be at least three pages long.
Your written report should be a two-page summary of the article (typed double-spaced), following the format found on page two of this document. Your report should be clear and concise, and it should have a clean, professional appearance. In the corporate world, if you write a memo that is longer than two double-spaced pages, it is likely that some of your intended readers will not find the time to read it. Therefore, you need the ability to express your ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively. I intend for this assignment to provide you with practice in producing this kind of work. Following are some of the items (some of which should be common sense) that I will consider in evaluating your report. Please use these items as a checklist before you submit your report.
• Choose an article that (a) is relevant to the course, (b) you consider to be interesting and useful, (c) is no more than 24 months old., (d) is at least three pages long.
• Do not use a title page or enclose your work in a folder or cover. Just use the format shown in the example on page two. Underline or italicize the title of the publication in which your article appeared. Please staple (not paper clip) your written summary on top of a photocopy of the article (not the original pages from the magazine).
• Use the headings shown in the attached example. Include these actual headings in your paper, underlined as shown. Indent your paragraphs as shown in the attached example.
• Write in a simple, clear style, organizing your ideas such that only one reading is required to understand your message. Avoid using long or complicated sentences.
• Please double-space your report, and use 12-point type, one-inch margins left, right, top & bottom and no more than 28 lines per page. Use just one font throughout, and avoid excessive use of bold or italics type.
• Your report should not exceed two double-spaced pages in length. If it does, you have some editing to do: Prioritize it, edit it, and summarize it until it fits.
• Proofread your work to eliminate misspelled words, grammatical errors, incorrect punctuation, and awkward sentences.
• Do not use the author’s exact words without indicating that it is a quote. In general, it is better to use your own words than to quote from the article. If you quote from the article, be sure to follow the quote with the number of the page in the article on which the quoted passage appears. In addition, circle the quoted passage on that page of the article copy that you submit with your report. If you use a quote, be careful to make it accurate.
