Identify the main functions of network operating systems

Assignment 6: Identify the main functions of network operating systems

Outcomes addressed in this Assignment:

Unit Outcomes:

Identify the main functions of network operating systems.

Recognize the importance of the network server and the different types of network servers available.

Identify the different levels of RAID.

Distinguish between local area networks, metropolitan area networks, and wide area networks. Identify the differences between a connection-oriented network and a connectionless network, and give an example of each.

Discuss the basic concepts of network congestion, including quality of service.

Course Outcomes:

IT331-2: Evaluate Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies.

IT331-5: Practice global interconnectedness as it applies to your field of study.

Assignment Instructions:

Complete the following questions in an MS Word Document in APA format. Double space your work and place in 12 point font using Times New Roman. You must include both a separate cover and reference page.

  1. Create a table to compare Novell, Windows, Mac, UNIX, and Linux server operating systems. You should identify the most recent server operating system for each to consider. For Linux and UNIX which have multiple variants, you may choose one current server variant. Include practical considerations such as cost as well as functional considerations.

  1. A LAN and a WAN may be differentiated by the types of media and devices used, by the distance over which they operate, by the network and subnet topology, and by the dominant communication protocols. Describe how LANs and WANs differ in each of these aspects.

  1. In a client/server system, a client transmits a request to a server, the server performs a processing operation, and the server returns a result. Describe at least five of the possible things that can go wrong with the transmission in this scenario and how these issues can be avoided.

  1. You are hired by a firm that has offices in Peru, France, the United States, and Hungary. Your job is to coordinate a team of IT employees to connect all of the individual sites into one large WAN. Explain what the personnel implications are when setting up a WAN on a global basis. What are some of the barriers involved with global teams?

  1. For the network that you have chosen to characterize, identify all items (peripheral devices, data, applications, access points, etc.) being shared by users on the network. Explain how each is shared.

Directions for Submitting Your Assignment:

Compose your Assignment in a Microsoft Word document and save it as IT 331 YourName_Unit_6.doc and submit it to the Dropbox for Unit 6.

Written Assignment Requirements:

Written work should be free of spelling, grammar, and APA errors. Points deducted from the grade for each writing, spelling, or grammar error are at your instructor’s discretion.

Assignment 6 Grading Rubric = 55 points

Assignment Requirements Points Possible Points Earned
Question 1:
Table created to compare Novell, Windows, Apple, UNIX, and Linux server operating systems.

Identified most recent operating system in use for each.

Practical considerations, such as cost and function, were addressed for each item in the chart.

Question 2:
Clearly differentiated how LANs and WANs differed in terms of media and devices used.

Cleary differentiated LANs and WANs by distance over which they operate, topologies used and protocols employed.

Question 3:
At least five possible transmission issues in described client/server scenario were detailed.

Clearly addressed how the five identified issues can be avoided.

Question 4:
Explained the personnel implications of setting up a WAN on a global basis.

Effectively addressed the barriers involved with global teams 0–5
for the given scenario sharing from their Readings and research.

Question 5:
Identified all items (peripheral devices, data, applications, access points, etc.) being shared by users of their chosen network.

Explained how each device on the chosen network is being shared.
