The analytical essay

The analytical essay consists in an analysis of fallacies and cognitive biases that hinder effective problem solving, acquisition of knowledge, and productive activity. The list of fallacies and biases provided as a resource and the attached file of pages 117-170 of The Influencing Machine by Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld,( WW. Norton & Co., 2011) will assist in your analysis. Provide References in APA format that include Langewiesche and another of the assigned readings, the Gladstone material (and NJIT lecture), and two additional sources that meet the criteria of Research RoadMap #2 which have been consulted to assist your analysis (Follow the link in Roadmap #2 and click on the yellow tab "CRAAP Test." Use in-text citations to document the locations of the information from these sources. Make good use of direct quotation as well as paraphrase from your sources. In addition some attention should be given to such matters as “pattern recognition” wherein our mind makes connections between different ideas, visual patterns, words, events, and objects. For example, our brain is capable of processing representative and abstract thinking, such as metaphors. Thus, an aspect of our brain’s functioning is to make abstract connections or to think creatively, as Professor Steven Novella of the Yale School of Medicine points out in his “Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills.” Our minds are also capable of a type of parallel thinking that occurs when presented with ambiguities, such as the captive who blinked “torture” while simultaneously speaking positively of his treatment in captivity in the presence of the enemy.

As you analyze the problems presented by the assigned readings, note the manner in which you came to an awareness of why there was success or failure. Langewiesche has used writing techniques from fictional storytelling to guide your thinking to accept his conclusions. For example, he depicts the ride in the simulator that parallels the situation that had occurred in the Columbia space flight. Who should have been informed? Who had the authority to make decisions? What discrepancy is there between what should have occurred and what actually did occur during the Columbia spaceflight?

Thus, you have a double duty as you conduct your analysis of one or both of the problems (actual and potential):– your analysis of the actual problems and then of how the essayists facilitated your analysis. As you develop your thesis, I also expect you to ask some research questions that will require light research (two or three sources) to deepen your understanding and analysis
