What to do: WATCH THE FILM FIRST, READ THE TEXT/ARTICLE FOR THE WEEK AFTERWARD.

Introduction: This week we are concluding with China in order to study its response to globalization. Hero (2002, Zhang) is one the most important blockbuster films of Chinese history. It is a historical film or drama (it belongs to the genre of wuxia). Thus, this film will serve as a way to explore China’s attempt to become a global cultural hegemonic power (a global Other) similar to Hollywood, as this country’s size and economy dwarf South Korea’s. After directing similar historical films, Zhang was then recruited by the Chinese government to direct the next biggest global spectacle produced by China at the time: the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. More recently, he also directed another blockbuster film, The Great Wall (2016), which was released this year at movie theaters in the US.

This is perhaps the most aesthetically beautiful film of the entire semester. Keep this in mind when analyzing the style of the film. Does this film spectacle generate critical/rational or bodily/irrational reactions?

THE FILM IS ABOUT THE UNIFICATION OF CHINA BY EMPEROR QIN IN 221 AD. BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT WE HAVE DEFINED THE THIRD PHASE OF GLOBALIZATION AS PRECISELY DIS-UNIFIED OR FRAGMENTED AS A RESULT OF THE CRISIS OF NORTH AMERICAN HEGEMONY (WE ARE ALL OTHERS).  KEEP ALSO IN MIND WHAT I DISCUSSED IN MY PRESENTATION ABOUT SOUTH KOREAN HISTORICAL DRAMAS AND GLOBALIZATION.

Plot Summary: “At the height of China’s Warring States period, the country was divided into seven kingdoms: Qin, Zhao, Han Wei, Yan, Chu and Qi. For years, the separate kingdoms fought ruthlessly for supremacy. As a result, the populace endured decades of death and suffering.

The Kingdom of Qin was the most determined of all. The Qin King was obsessed with conquering all of China and becoming her first Emperor. He had long been the target of assassins throughout the other six states. Of all the would-be killers, none inspired as much fear as the three legendary assassins, Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky.

To anyone who defeated the three assassins, the King of Qin promised great power, mountains of gold and a private audience with the King himself. But defeating the killers is a near impossible task. For ten years no one came close to claiming the prize. So when the enigmatic county sheriff, Nameless, came to the palace bearing the legendary weapons of the slain assassins, the King was impatient to hear his story. Sitting in the palace, only ten paces from the King, Nameless told his extraordinary tale…”

Question (answer 1, 2, and 3; do not disconnect the questions, attempt to create logical transitions from 1 to 3 while using different paragraphs; give a conclusion, at the end). Disclaimer: The questions below do reveal part of the plot of the film, although at a very general level.

1- Begins by reviewing the existing literature on the topic (in our case and for lack of time just the weekly article) and isolates the concepts and ideas that might help construct the student’s own analysis.

2- Focuses on a scene in order to analyze the film, since a complete analysis of the film is impossible with 350 words. Make sure that you give a detailed, concrete analysis, and give the exact time in order to proof that you have watched it.

3- The paper retakes the key concepts/ideas from section 1 and 2, and gives a more general conclusion that situates the film and the analysis in the context of globalization.

It helps to also use the key concepts that we have learnt through the semester: the Other as defining Us/our Identity or Self, Dual Identification/Disavowal, Phases of Globalization, Power, Master/leader, Cultural Hegemony, Imperialism, Biopolitics, Masculinity, Double Consciousness, Hybridity…..

Word Limit: Respond with no less than 325 words and a maximum of 350. Posting: Copy directly the text onto the window of the essay question. Grading criteria: The weekly papers will be graded on: grammar and vocabulary, logic and structure of the papers, originality, and the degree to which the paper responds to the question posted on l2d without digressing.

Word Limit: Respond with no less than 325 words and a maximum of 350.
